BENTON, KY — September 2, 2026 — Marshall County Schools has been awarded $7,484 through the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet’s 2026 Waste Tire Crumb Rubber/Tire-Derived Products Grant Program to purchase outdoor benches and a picnic table made with recycled Kentucky waste tires.
The grant will support the purchase of five three-foot park benches, seven six-foot park benches, and one six-foot picnic table for Benton Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Jonathan Elementary School, Sharpe Elementary School, and the Marshall County Board of Education Office.
The durable, low-maintenance outdoor furnishings will provide additional seating and gathering spaces for students, staff, families, and visitors while giving Kentucky waste tires a beneficial second use. By incorporating recycled tire-derived products into school spaces, the project supports environmental awareness while providing practical improvements throughout the district.
“This project shows how recycled materials can be used to make practical, long-lasting products that benefit our students and community,” said Superintendent Bill Thorpe. “We are grateful for the support of the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet and excited to see the finished product.”
The Waste Tire Grant Program requires a 25% local match, which Marshall County Schools may provide through cash or qualifying in-kind contributions.
