An induction ceremony for the 2026 Class of the Marshall County Atheltics Hall of Fame will take place Thursday, September 10th.
Each year, the Marshall County Athletic Foundation recognizes an outstanding group of athletes, coaches, teams, and contribuators whose achievements have left a lasting impact on Marshall County athletics.
A reception for the 2026 Hall of Fame Class will be held at 5:30 pm in the MCHS commons/cafeteria, followed by the ceremony in the Kenneth Shadowen Performing Arts Center at 7 pm.
Individual Inductees
Gus Gillespie – Coach
One of the most successful basketball coaches in Marshall County history, Gus Gillespie compiled a remarkable 293-119 record in 13 seasons, averaging nearly 23 wins per year. His teams captured eight district championships and advanced to five regional championship games, winning regional titles in 2011 and 2012. The 2011 Marshals advanced to the state tournament quarterfinals, while the 2012 team established a program record with 32 victories. Gillespie was named Purchase Coach of the Year three times and ranks among the winningest coaches in Region 1 history.
Stephen Atkinson – Basketball
A standout performer for the Marshals, Stephen Atkinson earned All-Purchase Team honors in 2010 and 2011 and was named Purchase Player of the Year in 2011. He received Honorable Mention All-State recognition and ranks 20th on the Marshals’ all-time scoring list with 1,062 career points. Atkinson was named Most Valuable Player of the 2011 Region 1 Tournament and went on to play four collegiate seasons at Missouri Southern State University.
Cole Nelson – Basketball
The floor leader of Marshall County’s back-to-back regional championship teams in 2011 and 2012, Cole Nelson was named Purchase Player of the Year in 2012 and earned Honorable Mention All-State honors. He was the MVP of the 2012 Region 1 Tournament and remains among the top five in program history in both assists and steals. Nelson continued his success at Bethel University, where he scored more than 1,000 career points and finished among the program’s all-time leaders in assists and steals.
Benny Goheen – Basketball
One of the legends of North Marshall basketball, Benny Goheen was the 1961 Purchase Player of the Year and earned Third Team All-State honors. He helped lead North Marshall to regional championships in 1959 and 1961, including the historic 1959 state championship team. Goheen ranks ninth on North Marshall’s all-time scoring list with 1,007 points and later played for Murray State University, helping the Racers reach their first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Larry Krouse – Contributor
Larry Krouse served as the second head football coach in Marshall County history and guided the Marshals to their first winning season in 1977. His 1978 team posted a 9-1 record, tied for the best regular-season mark in program history. Krouse’s leadership was instrumental in the construction of Carroll Traylor Stadium, giving Marshall County football a permanent home on campus. Following his coaching career, he spent 20 seasons as a color commentator and analyst for Marshals football broadcasts, earning recognition as one of the premier high school football analysts in Kentucky.
Barry Faith – Basketball
Barry Faith was one of the premier players in North Marshall history. He ranks fourth on North Marshall’s all-time scoring list with 1,194 points and earned All-Purchase Team honors in both 1968 and 1969. Faith was also recognized as an Honorable Mention All-State in 1969.
Leah Beth – Basketball
Leah Beth stands among the greatest players in Lady Marshals history. A two-time Purchase Player of the Year in 1998 and 2000, she became one of only four sophomores in award history to earn the distinction. Despite missing her junior season due to injury, Beth returned to lead Marshall County to a 31-2 record as a senior. She earned Third Team All-State honors in 1998 and Second Team All-State recognition in 2000 and finished her career with 1,298 points, ranking 13th in Lady Marshals history.
Beth continued her career at Western Kentucky University, appearing in 92 games as the Lady Hilltoppers reached postseason play in each of her four seasons, including an NCAA Tournament appearance and three WNIT appearances.
Cayce Hendrickson Griffith – Golf
A 2015 Marshall County graduate, Cayce Hendrickson Griffith established herself as one of the most accomplished golfers in Lady Marshals history. She led Marshall County to three KHSAA State Tournament appearances and captured the 2013 Region 1 Individual Championship. Griffith became the first girls golfer in school history to achieve an under-par scoring average and recorded a Top-10 finish at the state tournament.
At the collegiate level, she competed for the University of Missouri women’s golf team, earning SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition all four years and multiple WGCA All-Scholar Team honors. Her achievements also include a runner-up finish in the 2018 Kentucky Women’s State Amateur Championship and the 2025 Kentucky Women’s Mid-Amateur State Championship.
Vicki English – Contributor
For more than 20 years, Vicki English has been an indispensable member of Marshall County athletics. As Athletic Secretary and the lead organizer of the Hall of Fame event for 19 years, she has played a vital role in supporting coaches, athletes, administrators, and families while helping preserve and celebrate the rich history of Marshall County athletics. Her dedication, professionalism, and tireless service have made a lasting impact on generations of student-athletes and firmly established her legacy as one of the program’s most valued contributors.
Team Inductees
2011 Marshall County Boys Basketball Team
The 2011 Marshals delivered one of the most memorable seasons in school history, capturing the Region 1 Championship and advancing to the quarterfinal round of the KHSAA State Tournament. Led by an outstanding group of players and coaches, the team helped establish Marshall County as one of Kentucky’s premier basketball programs and laid the foundation for continued success.
1984 Marshall County Girls Softball Team
The 1984 Lady Marshals softball team earned its place in school history by finishing as Kentucky State Runner-Up. Their remarkable season showcased talent, determination, and teamwork, establishing a standard of excellence that continues to inspire future generations of Marshall County athletes.
