Murray State University has awarded Cade Sorrells of Marshall County High School with the prestigious Presidential Fellowship scholarship, which includes full tuition, housing, and meals for up to four years at the University.
“It is a privilege to welcome this exceptional group of students to Murray State University,” said University President Dr. Ron K. Patterson. “Their dedication to academic excellence is remarkable, and we are proud to provide a rigorous, high-impact curriculum that will inspire, challenge, and support each of our Presidential Fellows as they work toward their professional and personal aspirations.”
Students selected for the Presidential Fellowship scholarship complete a rigorous multi-step application process that includes multiple in-person interviews. During their time at Murray State, recipients of the scholarship are responsible for conducting extensive research projects and serving as leaders in the campus community.
Sorrells says he was very excited upon learning he had gotten the scholarship. “I was ecstatic. I cried a little bit and when I told my mom, she cried a little bit.” Sorrells says the staff at MCHS is great, wanting to help students achieve at the highest level. He said teacher John Clayton was the biggest reason he even had the qualifying ACT score to get the scholarship interview. He also thanked the school counselors for their “good advice.”
Evan Merrick, principal at MCHS, said “Cade is an exceptional student that has been a leader amongst his peers during his time at MCHS. I am proud of his accomplishments as he is a great representative to be a Presidential Fellow and I am excited to see what the future holds for Cade at Murray State and beyond!”
Sorrells has been on the MCHS track team for four years and is team captain. He is also involved in several organizations, including the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Student Council. He plans to major in biology pre-med in hopes of becoming a surgeon.
Incoming first-year students who have a 28 ACT composite score minimum (or 1250 SAT verbal and math combined score minimum), along with a 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale, are eligible to apply for the Presidential Fellowship scholarship.
