Evan Merrick has been selected to be the next principal of Marshall County High School. Merrick, who currently serves as Assistant Principal at the high school, will take over for Shannon Solomon, who is retiring in December.
Merrick is in his 20th year in education with the Marshall County School System. He began his career in 2006 as a Social Studies teacher at Marshall County High School, serving in that role until 2020. During this time, he also led the school’s football program as Head Coach from 2014 to 2019.
From 2020 to 2022, Merrick served as a School Counselor at Marshall County High School before moving to South Marshall Middle School as Assistant Principal for the 2022–2023 school year. He returned to Marshall County High School in 2023 to serve as Assistant Principal.
Merrick holds certifications in Secondary Education – Social Sciences, Instructional Leadership – School Principal, and School Counseling. His career reflects a strong commitment to student achievement, leadership development, and the continued success of Marshall County High School.
"Evan brings a wealth of experience and a strong vision for our students and staff,” said Marshall County School Superintendent Bill Thorpe. “I am confident that his leadership will inspire growth and excellence within our school community. Together, we will continue to create an environment where every student can thrive."
“I am so grateful for this opportunity and excited to serve the wonderful staff and students of Marshall County High School,” said Merrick.
Merrick was officially introduced during a meet and greet at the high school Thursday afternoon. He says he's had some great mentors, including current principal Shannon Solomon, and is looking forward to working side by side with her until her retirement.
Moving forward, Merrick says he wants to continue the positive momentum, focusing on student and staff retention and growing the curriculum, trying to stay ahead of what things are in modern education.
Merrick has been married to his wife, Liz, for 20 years. They have four children, Kylie, Kaden, Kenton, and Kinsey. His official start date as principal is January 1, 2026.
