The Marshall County Schools Free Summer Feeding Program kicks off this Thursday in an effort to ensure Marshall County students have access to food during the summer months.
Today at North Marshall and South Marshall Middle Schools, final preparations were being made by packaging up the meals and getting them ready for distribution.
McKenzie Suiter, Director of School Nutrition for Marshall County Schools, says everyone is welcome to get meals, regardless of income. The deadline has expired to register for this federally funded summer feeding program but Suiter says you can still come the first day of distribution and fill out a registration form. A parent, guardian, or student must be present at pick-up.
Suiter says she is planning for about 1,400 meal kits to be sent out each week during the four week program in June. The kits include seven breakfasts and seven lunches, totaling about 19,600 meals a week. "Feeding kids is important," said Suiter. "With the rising cost of groceries across the country, the need is great."
John Cain, the Kentucky Kids Eat Program Director for Feeding Kentucky, was at South Marshall Middle School today observing the meal packaging assembly line. He says the Marshall County School District does a wonderful job with its summer feeding program and is meeting a tremendous need in this county. He says summer should be fun for kids. They should be thinking about their next fun adventure, not where their next meal will come from.
