MCHS SENIOR IS RECIPIENT OF PRESTIGIOUS MARVIN D. MILLS SCHOLARSHIP

March 29, 2024 - Benton, Ky. - Murray State University has announced that Sidoney Morgan of Marshall County High School is a recipient of the Marvin D. Mills Scholarship, which covers tuition, housing, and meals for up to four years at the university

Students selected for the Marvin D. Mills Scholarship must have a minimum of 24 ACT composite score and a 3.2 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.  To remain a part of the Diversity Scholars Program, students must complete Mills Multicultural Center requirements and participate in the Emerging Scholars Institute.

Shannon Solomon, principal at MCHS said “Sidoney possesses remarkable qualities that make her a valuable addition to any community. Her selflessness, genuineness, and self-motivation speak volumes about her character and dedication. The confidence she exhibits in her work and volunteer endeavors suggests a strong sense of purpose. With these attributes, Sidoney will make positive contributions to the Murray State community and beyond.”

Morgan moved to the United States from Jamaica in 2020.  While reflecting on her high school career, Morgan said she is appreciative of the pain and struggles caused by the drastic change and getting involved within her school and community has left a huge impact on the entirety of her life.

Morgan says she “freaked out” when learning about the scholarship being awarded to her. “I then called my mom and she started crying on the phone.  I was very worried about paying for college.  So I’m just so happy and relieved.”  Sidoney thanks MCHS Senior Counselor Jill Boone for telling her about the Mills Scholarship opportunity and in helping her with the application process.  She also thanked her mom and the rest of her family for their support.

Morgan maintains a 4.29 GPA and is an active member of the National Honors Society and a student peer leader in Sources of Strength. She has also attended both the Commonwealth Honors Academy and the Governor’s Scholars Program.

Sidoney plans to pursue a degree in Spanish interpretation and Translation at Murray State.  She’s planning to do medical interpretation by going into hospitals and helping people who don’t speak English.  Sidoney says “I want to be with people at their most difficult time to provide support and comfort.”

The scholarship is named in honor of Dr. Marvin Mills, who taught at Murray State University from 1977 to 1988.  He and his wife, Eunice, established the scholarship and also supported the establishment of the Dr. Marvin D. Mills Emerging Scholars Institute, which is designed to address and meet the needs of the university’s multicultural student population while assisting them in the transition from high school to college.
