MCHS SENIOR AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS PRESIDENTIAL FELLOWSHIP

March 29, 2024 - Benton, Ky. -  Murray State University has awarded Izzy Washburn of Marshall County High School the prestigious Presidential Fellowship, which includes full tuition, housing, and meals for up to four years at the university.

Students selected for the Presidential Fellowship complete a rigorous application process that includes multiple interviews.  During their time at Murray State, recipients of the fellowship are responsible for conducting extensive research projects and serving as leaders in the campus community.

Incoming first-year students who have a 28 ACT composite score minimum (or 1310 SAT verbal and math combined score minimum), along with a 3.7 GPA on a 4.0 scale, are eligible to apply for the Presidential Fellowship.

Shannon Solomon, principal at MCHS, said “Izzy possesses outstanding character traits that make her a role model for her fellow students.  Her integrity, empathy, and kindness contribute to a positive and inclusive school environment.  I’m confident that Izzy will continue to excel in her academic pursuits and contribute positively to any community she becomes a part of in the future.”

Washburn says she started crying when learning she had been awarded the scholarship.  “I was just   so relieved and overjoyed.”  Izzy says MCHS Senior Counselor Jill Boone was instrumental in helping with the scholarship process and she thanked her parents, Dave and Jennifer Washburn, for their love and support.

Washburn maintains a 4.42 GPA and is involved in several clubs and organizations, including the National Honors Society, Interact Club, and HOSA. She is also a member of the Lady Marshals basketball team and the high school track and field team.

Izzy plans to major in biology and pre-med at Murray State, then go to medical school.  She hopes to return to Western Kentucky and become a pediatrician.
