Benton Middle School eighth graders have completed a unit in the study of the history of quilt making. Special presentations were made by Mrs. Valera Brooks to the group and then all students participated in the production of a quilt block. Special quilts were on display provided by Mrs. Brooks and the Quilters of the Benton First United Methodist Church. Students learned to appreciate how complex the pieced quilt block can be when making their own pieced block. In art class, students are making a narrative quilt block using fabric. The unit was completed with a visit to the National Quilt Museum. While at the National Quilt Museum, the eighth graders participated in a quilt scavenger hunt that gave them the opportunity to explore the museum themselves. They were able to view and appreciate over 150 Best of Show and Master Quilts that are on display in the quilt museum. A special display of World War II quilts was also available for the students to see. The students also had the opportunity to hear about the history of Paducah from local historian Mrs. Margie Smith. She also gave them a guided tour of the PAPA art gallery in downtown Paducah. It was an educational and fun day for all involved.
