The portraits were divided and measured into six equal parts. Each student used charcoal to design his/her individual square. Students assembled their completed squares to the overall design. They chose historical people such as Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy. Students learned how important it is to treat others equally and with respect and how people should never be judged by the color of their skin, the clothes they wear, or how popular they are. Students explained how each one of us can stand up against this type of prejudice in his/her school.

Mrs. Valera Brooks has enriched and inspired our 7th and 8th grade students with a unit that coincided with Black History Month. This unit helped our students to understand the civil rights movement and famous Americans involved in it. Their courage and spirit have inspired all of us to reach our highest potential. Tanner Gray presented a speech as Frederick Douglass, Mikayla Darnall portrayed Harriett Tubman, Leiren Jackson portrayed Sojourner Truth, Abby Myers was our on the spot reporter and the remaining students acted as runaway slaves.
