Thanks to a Center for Middle School Academic Achievement grant written by their teacher, Donna York, 8th graders at Benton Middle School got to experience the dissection of barn owl pellets.  These pellets contain the fur, feathers, and bone that the owl cannot digest.  They are great indicators of the food chains, webs, and energy transfers in which these owls are involved.  Although some were squeamish at first, most enjoyed the experience. The ribs, leg bones, and skulls of many White-footed mice, Shrews, and Old world rats were discovered during the dissection process.  Evidently, these Barn Owls were eating well and in an environment that was well-suited to their dietary needs. This activity supports Kentucky's Core Content Standards related to ecology and energy transfers in ecosystems.
