Benton Middle School participated in the District Governor's Cup Competition on Saturday, January 23, at North Marshall Middle School.  The quick recall and future problem solving teams won first place.  Benton Middle was also awarded the Katherine Hume sportsmanship award as well as the overall competition winner. Individual assessment winners were: Robert Blankenship - 1st in math and arts/humanities, Leiren Jackson - 1st in composition and language arts, Rachel Solomon - 2nd in composition, Gabriel Powell - 3rd in social studies, and Kolt Boddy - 4th in social studies. 

                

On Saturday, February 6th  sixth graders from Benton Middle and North Marshall Middle participated in a Winter Shoot-out Tournament  sponsored by the Bucs baseball boosters. Twenty-six teams competed for the title. The team defeated Heath Middle in pool play and then defeated Murray Middle and Calloway Middle in the semi-final game. They placed first after defeating Martin Tennessee in the championship game Saturday night.

BMS students worked together to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Students prepared 108 complete health kits that have been sent to Haiti to help the people there.  These kits included soap, nail files, tooth brushes, wash clothes, towels, and bandages. The students brought the supplies and assembled the kits. This was a real world lesson in helping others.

                   

7th grader Kolt Boddy won the 2010 Voter Slogan and Essay Contest that was sponsored by the Office of the Kentucky Secretary of State. Kolt and hundreds of other contestants were asked to write a slogan that addresses voting, voter registration, and/or elections in Kentucky. Kolt's winning slogan was "Race on over and become a registered voter!"  Kolt wins a $1000 savings bond for his award.  Kolt took part in this contest as part of his World History class taught by Mr. Chris Harvey.  

                

Benton Middle School cheerleaders won 1st place in  the middle school division of KAPOS Region 1 competition.  They competed at Graves Co. High School on Sunday, January 24th. They are coached by Haley Chambers and Christina Long.   Cheerleaders are: Back row left: Megan Riley, Kimberlynn Richardson, Haley Ramage, Chaney Sherman, Sydney Goff, Amy Ford, Leiren Jackson  Bottom left: Kinzie Sherman, Gabby Oakley, Sara Oswalt, Charlstyn Beard, Devan Doss, Kara Kelley, Alyssa Smith, Abby Harris, Sydney Smothers, Ashlynn Thornton, Billie Moore                                                                                                                                                                       

The Benton Middle School 7th grade girls finished an undefeated 15-0 regular season by winning the 7th grade girls' tournament hosted by BMS.  After defeating South Marshall and Calloway County in the first and second rounds, Benton capped off the season with a victory in the championship game against Graves County.  Both the Benton Middle School 8th grade boys' and girls' basketball teams will compete in the 8th grade district tournament at North Marshall Middle School beginning on Monday, January 25, 2010, at 5:00

Leiren Jackson and Blaine Skeen, 8th graders, were chosen by the faculty and staff of Benton Middle School as "Ideal Students."  Congratulations to Leiren and Blaine who represent BMS with exemplary Character, Achievement, and Pride everyday.

              

         The students at Benton Middle School recently participated in a fundraiser to benefit a local boy, Wayd Wood. The students at BMS raised over $1,340, for Wayd; he has a type of childhood Leukemia.The catalyst for the money was a fundraiser called "Penny Wars."  The fundraiser was sponsored by the BMS Student Government. The idea behind having the classes "battle" each other to raise funds was orchestrated by Cameron Miller, a 6th Grade SGA Representative. Pictured are Mr. Cody Lane and Cameron Miller

Benton Middle School ranks 4th in the state of KY with an overall academic transition index of 110 on the 2009 KCCT.  Science scores ranked #1 in the state with a score of 121.82!  Congratulations BMS students and faculty!

Ms. Kristen Chumbler's sixth grade art students at Benton Middle School participated in a art contest sponsored by the personnel cabinet. The theme of the statewide competition was "State Employees Making a Difference Everyday, in Everyway."  Mollie Gillespie, a sixth grade student at BMS won first place for her art work. Miss Gillespie traveled to Frankfort on September 30 where she was recognized by Governor Steve Beshear. Miss Gillepie's art will be reproduced and distributed across the state.
