Beginning the first week of February BMS will begin an after school exercise program called Couch to 5K. The program will last 9 weeks and will meet three days a week until 4:00 (M, W, T). Couch to 5K will be for students and teachers. For more information see Coach Love.

BMS gifted and talented students were selected for their poems that will be on display at the Journey StoriesSmithsonian exhibit at Wrather Museum at Murray State University. The poems have been a big hit among adults and visiting school groups. Students are front left:

BMS cheerleaders won 1st Place in the non-spring floor intermediate junior high division at the Jam-Bash cheer competition in Nashville, TN.

BMS seventh graders participated in the Wildlife Conservation Writing Contest. The students could write a letter, article, editorial, or speech to explain to their audience the importance of wildlife conservation. The following students were recognized for their writing: Madeline Henson - first place, Destyn Pearson - second place, and Kinsey Henson - third place.

Forty-three students from Benton Middle School were recognized and treated to lunch at Mr. Gatti's by the Marshall County Board of Education for academic achievements in state testing from the previous school year. These students scored distinguished in all areas of the KCCT test for the 2010-11 school year. Photos

Middle schools across the state were asked to participate in a horse-themed banner showcase for the upcoming 2011 National Middle School Association Conference (NMSA) to be held in Louisville, KY, Nov. 10-12 at the Kentucky International Convention Center, Thirty middle schools from across the state jumped on this historic opportunity to showcase their visual arts programs to over 10,000 middle school teachers, administrators, and national education leaders, including Arne Duncan, the U.S. Secretary of Education, who will be one of the keynote speakers at the conference. The completed banners will be displayed throughout the conference dates in one of the main hallways at the convention center. Special lighting, display structures, and music will enhance the banner showcase, making them quite the show-stopper. Even the NMSA Conference committee is excited to see the completed banners as this is the first time such an art project has been attempted for their conference. The Kentucky middle school visual arts programs will "Take the Lead!"


On Monday, November 7th , Benton Middle School and Benton Elementary had their “Doting over Distinguished” celebration. This walk recoginzes all the students that scored a distinguished on one or more of their 2010-2011 KCCT tests. Distinguished students paraded around the court square for businesses, parents, teachers, and classmates to celebrate their success. Click here for more photos

Congratulations to several 7th graders who qualified for the Duke Talent Identification Program based on their excellent performance on the tests they took in the spring. To qualify, these students has to score at the 95th percentile or above on the KCCT or Iowa Test of Basic Skills. or have a Cognitive Skills Index of 125 or higher on the Test of Cognitive Skills. Students are Isaac Bayer, Claire Edwards, Will Green, Tessa Haines, Ian Harrington, Caitlin Harvey, CJ Hendricks, Emma Henry, Madeline Henson, Marlee Henson, Lexi James, Karissa Jordan, Michael Murphy, Destyn Pearson, Trevor Scoggins, Travis Tack, Trace Temple, Cali Thompson, Chloe Waggoner, and Ellie Young.

Parents and students- Please take time to check out each of the individual teacher websites. There you can find out contact information for each teacher, as well what each class is doing every day. Parents, this is a great way for you to keep up with your child's homework assignments. Students, it is also a great way for you to have discussions with your teachers or fellow classmates about whatever is going on in your class. Check out those websites!

All school faculty have been trained on "Signs of Suicide" as required by Senate Bill 65. Guidance counselors will also be training our students on warning signs. The program "ACT" focuses on acknowledging, caring, and telling a trusted adult if a student is worried about a friend.
